It’s difficult to define “exploration” in today’s day and age.

Explorers are no longer tasked with daring expeditions to the edges of the world.

Instead, modern-day exploration has become the opportunity to document moments in time while carving out stories that change people’s perceptions about our well-mapped Earth.

Welcome to the free version of The Thousand-Mile Journey by Adam J. Cheshier, a space where I write about all the obscure pockets of the globe I find myself in.

The narratives here will depict my passion for slow travel and the obsession I have for documenting the affect time plays on modern-day environments.

After the trail to Papua New Guinea ends, stick around and I’ll keep you updated as I take on two more expeditions in 2023:

The first is an overland journey spanning part of the Silk Road, where I will travel with a film crew across the Chatkal Mountains of Central Asia. The path leads us some 5,000 kilometers through nine countries including: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

The second, a 1,200-kilometer solo passage retracing the footsteps of the biblical Abraham through the holiest of lands. Coincidentally, the route crosses some of the most dangerous modern-day borders on Earth — and I’ll do it all on foot. Starting in Turkey and passing through Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine, all the way to the Red Sea.

Thanks for being engaged!

You’ll hear from me soon,

Adam

In the meantime, tell your friends!
